Glossary

X-ray crystallography

A technique that identifies the 3D arrangement of a protein by creating a crytal from the protein and bombarding the crystal with x-rays.
>>

Temperature sensitive mutants

These are a type of mutant where the protein that is mutated functions correctly at one temperature but abnormally at another temperature.
>>

Phagocytosis

A form of endocytosis which takes up particulate molecules rather than molecules dissolved in liquid. This is " cell eating". It can be utilised by immmune cells as a specialised function.
>>

Pinocytosis

A type of endocytosis which takes up molecules dissolved in liquid. Literally means "cell drinking"
>>

Kinesin

One type of motor protein that uses the energy of ATP to move along the cytoskeleton.
>>

Endocytosis

uptake of material into a cell by an invaginationof the plasma membrane into the cytoplasm of the cell. There are several differeny types of endocytosis.
>>

Cytoskeleton

This is composed of actin and myosin protein filaments and is found throughout the cytoplasm of a cell. It contributes and maintains a cells morphology and allows directed transport of components of the cell including vesicles. Transport is directed by molecular motors dyenin and kinesisn.
>>

Cotranslational

As a protein is being synthesised on a ribosome of the rough endoplasmic reticulum it is directly imported into the golgi.
>>

Constitutive

Some thing such as a molecule that is produced continually. Opposite of regulated.
>>

Complex

This an assembly of molecules that work in conjunction with one another. They are held together by non-covalent bonds. The fusion machinery forms a protein complex.
